Beschreibung

The third stage of the Saar-Hunsrück Climb leads from Mettlach to Britten. The hike has a lot to offer in terms of both landscape and history. Ziegelberg Castle and the historic border stones from the time when Saarland did not belong to Germany are points of historical interest on the tour. Above all, however, you can enjoy the panorama of the Saar Valley on this almost 12-kilometre section of the Saar-Hunsrück Climb.

Wegbeschreibung

We start at the pedestrian zone in Mettlach and have plenty of time to take a look at the sights of Mettlach. Then the route leads to Ziegelberg Castle, which is located in an enchanted park with numerous exotic giant trees. We now ascend in switchbacks to the heights above Mettlach. Along the way, we have several fantastic views of the Saar Valley and Mettlach.

The next part of the stage takes us along a ridge above Saarhölzbach through open fields with beautiful views of the Saar valley. We now descend into the narrow Saarhölzbach valley. This 3-kilometre-long passage through the narrow, lonely valley is the scenic highlight of today's stage. The first part leads us past numerous ponds. Then it becomes wilder and narrower. We hike on narrow paths, some of which are built into the slopes. The paths change sides of the valley several times. In the valley, we can marvel at numerous historical boundary stones and discover stones that belong to an earlier water pipe. The boundary stones date from the time when Saarland did not belong to Germany. After the eventful ascent from the Saarhölzbachtal, we reach open fields and walk along a 500-meter-long access road to the stage destination of Britten.

Ausrüstung

The Saar-Hunsrück Climb is a natural trail, with 70% of the route leading over soft forest floors, grassy paths or along streams. After long periods of rain, parts of the trail may be difficult to walk on. Therefore, sturdy shoes are highly recommended.
