The Historic Düppenweiler Copper Mine
When visiting the copper mine, you’ll descend via the new Barbara Shaft into the underground world of the Düppenweiler visitor mine . Underground guided tours take place only on Saturdays and Sundays at 2 pm and 4 pm. Outside these times, visits are only possible by prior arrangement with the Beckingen local council (06835 550).
Approximately 600 metres of tunnels and four shafts, ranging in depth from 10 to 18 metres, have been uncovered and fitted with shaft headframes. The underground tours showcase the heart of the mine, featuring the ‘Mystallica’ light and sound installation, as well as the ‘Cathedral’, the underground lake and the machine shaft. Above ground, visitors can explore the copper smelter – built to historical specifications – which includes a crushing plant, a smelting house and machinery.
Regular guided tours take place on Saturdays and Sundays at 2.00 pm and 4.00 pm. It is advisable to book in advance with the Beckingen local council (during council opening hours on 06835/550) or on Saturdays and Sundays from 2 pm to 5 pm (Tourist Information at the Huthaus, tel. 06832/800011) is advisable.
