A stage with a highlight right at the start: the Hammelsberg Nature Reserve offers sweeping views across the Moselle valley. Another highlight of the stage is the Roman Villa Borg. Here, a villa rustica has been faithfully restored and rebuilt. The route winds its way through vineyards and along country lanes up to the heights of the Saargau region and on to the little village of Hellendorf.
Directions
We set off from the Baroque Garden in Perl and continue on to the hills above the Moselle valley. There, we make our way along narrow paths through unspoilt, protected woodlands. Along the way, we’ll walk for two kilometres through the cross-border ‘Hammelsberg’ nature reserve, with its orchid meadows and magnificent views of the Moselle Valley.
We can enjoy these views particularly well from a sensory bench.
Before heading towards Borg, we descend to the Weidof Sehndorf.
After passing under the motorway, we reach the hills between the Moselle and the Saar, which also offer sweeping views. The next few kilometres take us along flat terrain, mainly on footpaths, past several forest ponds through the woods near Borg. Right in the middle of this, we come across the beautifully reconstructed Roman villa complex with its Roman tavern.
At km 17.9, we reach the access path to Hellendorf, our stop for the day, 500 metres away.
Equipment
The Saar-Hunsrück-Steig trail winds its way across soft forest floor, along grassy paths or beside streams. However, this very feature can also cause problems after prolonged periods of rain, making parts of the trail difficult to walk on. Sturdy footwear is therefore recommended.
