In the heart of the village, the route winds its way through green spaces and past historic sites in Beckingen. Relics from the war years and traces of the local Karcher industrialist family offer insights into the village’s more recent history.
These are brought to life through videos and audio recordings along the route (accessible via mobile phone and QR codes).
The village of Beckingen bears witness to an eventful history. According to archaeological excavations and burial mounds, it must have been settled as early as 1800 to 1200 BC and, in the Middle Ages, was part of the Teutonic Order, with the seat of a commander – a fact that also inspired the design of the present-day municipal coat of arms. Due to a wide variety of historical events, Beckingen was, until the local government and territorial reform of 1974, a border region characterised by frequently changing ownership, seizures, looting and disputes with a wide range of landlords.
In the last century, Beckingen was shaped above all by the screw works founded in 1869 by the Karcher family dynasty, which was the largest employer in the Haustadter Valley.
We would like to invite you on this tour to visit the historically significant sites marked on this map during a short walk and to learn about Beckingen’s cultural and industrial history.
The tour involves not only walking but also, thanks to audiovisual information (audio and video recordings), a vivid presentation of background knowledge on the sights. All you need is a mobile phone to scan the QR codes.
