The tour starts at the harbour in Merzig. From there, the route takes you over the Hilbringer Bridge past the town hall and the town park to the Saar in the direction of Mettlach. The route leads along the Saar past Besseringen. After Besseringen, the route heads towards the Saar loops. Here it is worth making a short detour to the church of St Gangolf and the farm of the same name. Delicious specialities from St. Gangolf: the farm shop offers seasonal venison from deer and wild boar, game salami and fine brandies from its own production.
The tour continues through the Saarland's landmark, the Saarschleife. Passing forests and steep slopes, you reach the ceramic community of Mettlach. Here the journey can be interrupted for a visit to the ceramic experience worlds and the Villeroy & Boch factory outlet. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre of St Lutwinus and the Old Abbey with its old tower and park are also worth a visit. The Mettlach Abbey Brewery invites you to stop for a bite to eat. Excursion boats are available for round trips on the banks of the Saar and there are several places to stop for refreshments in the pedestrianised area.
In Mettlach, you cross the barrage again to return to the Saar Loop. This time on the opposite side of the loop, you cross the impressive river landscape. The Saarschleifenlodge wine bar and the gourmet station at the Welles ferry are two further culinary highlights of the Saarschleifenland. The route continues along the Saar through Dreisbach and back towards the centre of Merzig.
