On this tour, you can experience very special "border emotions" by artists from all over the world at the "Stones at the Border" sculpture symposium. The open landscape allows your gaze to wander far into France.
From the starting point at the harbour in Merzig, the route follows the Saar towards Dreisbach. On the way there, you change sides of the Saar to return to the starting side after Besseringen. In Dreisbach, you leave the Saar in the direction of Tünsdorf. You reach Tünsdorf via a wooded ascent. Tünsdorf, an old Roman settlement, was the centre of the Saargau region in the Middle Ages - at least in the area of today's municipality of Mettlach
From Tünsdorf, the route continues to Büschdorf. Shortly before Büschdorf, one of our gourmet stops with regional delicacies invites you to take a break. St Michael's Chapel in Büschdorf, built in 1867 in the neo-Romanesque style, has been the town's flagship since its renovation in 1986. The route now runs through the village centre to the border area with France. The Saarland cycle path leads along the border to the "Steine an der Grenze" sculpture symposium. Thirty-four sculptures are lined up here along the German-French border. The Franco-German border area was hotly contested for years and symbolised the enmity between the nations. In 1986, sculptors from all over the world began carving the stones along the border. As symbols and monuments of friendship, the sculptures are harmoniously integrated into the landscape and emphasise the understanding and cordiality that exists across borders today. The works lend the harsh Saargau landscape an unmistakable atmosphere and challenge the viewer to come to terms with the border situation.
From the border plateau, the route leads via Silwingen, Mondorf and Hilbringen back to the harbour of the Viezstadt Merzig. In the harbour, there are refreshment stops such as the brewery to round off the tour.
