The Orkelsfelsen near Orscholz is a striking, jagged quartzite cliff (approx. 400 metres high), which towers over a meadow on the edge of the village. The distinctive light grey rock structure is clearly visible and was declared a natural monument in 1937.
The name is presumably derived from a Frankish nobleman named Orko ("Orkelsfels" = rock of Orko), and there are rumours that a castle once stood there - although there is no historical proof of this. The Orkelsfelsen is part of popular hiking trails, such as the Traumschleife Cloefpfad or loops through the Steinbachtal valley, and offers panoramic views of the Saarschleife as well as views of the Saar valley
