Monument of Peace
Since 1991, the Monument of Peace has commemorated the victims of the fierce and costly battles at Orscholzriegel in the winter of 1944/45, in particular the fallen of the 94th US Infantry Division.
The German-American Peace Memorial is located on the Renglischberg ridge on the Oberleuken/Sinz border directly on the B406 federal road. As a memorial in the spirit of German-American friendship, it is a visible sign of reconciliation between the two peoples and, with the inscription: "No salvation lies in war, for peace we ask you all", calls for cooperation and commitment to peace.
In November 1945, members of the US Army erected a memorial stone for their fallen comrades on Potsdamer Platz at the Sinz/Münzingen junction. This memorial was moved to a more favourable location at the suggestion of the Volksbund Deutscher Kriegsgräberfürsorge e.V. and in agreement with the Traditional Association of the 94th US Infantry Division and, following its structural redesign, was elevated to the status of Monument of Peace.
American and German veterans, who had fought bitterly at the Orscholzriegel, came together on 13 October 1991 to inaugurate the Monument of Peace in fraternal fellowship. On two memorial plaques, in English and German, the then President of the United States George W. Bush commemorates the soldiers of the division who sacrificed their lives in the defence of freedom and concludes with the words: "This memorial should also remind us of our common commitments to international cooperation and peace." In the following years, further organised visits by delegations from America took place. However, 70 years after the end of the war, the number of veterans is rapidly decreasing. But the memorial continues to exist as a memorial for future generations.
