Swiss-born Wilhelm Tell von Fellenberg found his way to the Saar through love. He converted a dilapidated mill in Merzig into a prestigious castle. With its sandstone extension and its oriels and turrets, Schloss Fellenberg is not only a vivid example of 19th century architecture in Merzig, but also provides a fantastic backdrop for weddings.
After the Fellenbergs died without children, the house fulfilled various functions, such as a residence for district administrators or as a retirement home. Until 1964, numerous citizens saw the light of day in the maternity ward that was temporarily housed here. Since 1980, Fellenberg Castle has housed a museum for art and local history, which the district extensively restored from 1997 to 2000.
The repertoire of the cultural venue consists of temporary exhibitions by regional artists as well as exhibitions on local history with an extensive accompanying program of concerts, readings, matinees, lectures and workshops.
A reference library is attached to the museum. There you will find well over 10,000 books about the Merzig-Wadern district and neighboring areas. The extensive archive for the Merzig-Wadern district includes, among other things, the photo archive of former SZ editor Theo Plettenberg, the archive of the Saarbrücker Zeitung and the archive of local historian Johann Georg Becker-Krapp.
Paul Schneider Sculpture Park
The “Gardens Without Borders” initiative created an attractive park in front of the Fellenberg Castle Museum in 2004. This was dedicated to the sculptor Professor Paul Schneider on the occasion of his 85th birthday on May 6, 2012. In doing so, the district honors his artistic life's work. One of the most important projects of the artist, who died in 2021, is the international sculpture symposium “Stones on the Border”.
The park not only presents the unique works of Professor Paul Schneider, but also works of art by other renowned artists from various regions of Germany as well as from Italy, the Netherlands, Ireland and Switzerland. These include Maria Claudia Farina, Gerard Höweler, Eberhard Killguss, Professor Leo Kornbrust, Herbert Lankl, Thomas Link, Eileen Mac Donagh, Liselotte Netz-Paulik, Heinz Oliberius, Arthur Schneiter and Susanne Specht.
Enjoy the fascination of cross-border art and be inspired by the diversity that makes this place a unique experience! Welcome to a journey through the world of art in the Paul Schneider Sculpture Park.
