Historic city centre of Merzig
The historic old town of Merzig is home to numerous important architectural monuments.
The foyer of the townhouse built by baroque architect Christian Kretschmar houses 16 terracottas that were made by Villeroy & Boch on behalf of Bavarian King Ludwig II for Herrenchiemsee Palace. Another example of Kretschmar's architecture is the baroque Staad-Marxsche town house, which today houses the tourist information centre. And let's not forget the Seffersbach Bridge on Trierer Strasse, the last remaining "Molter system" suspension bridge in Saarland. This type of construction was the first to utilise a composite structure made of concrete and iron. It was restored to its original condition when the bridge was renovated in 2004.
